ECU recode? tip to manual

I got a p1613 code in my 99 passat 1.8t 5 speed. I think I know whats the p1613 code is all about. I recently swap the ecu because of erratic idle conditions. Well I plugged in the old ecu back and got the code at the front page when vag-com communicates with ecu...well one of the codes was 06001...and later learned that that code is specifically for stick transmission ECU. When I put back the new/used ecu#2 the code from vag-com said 06051...belongs to an ecu made for an auto transmission. So basically the ecu is trying to communicate with the TCU but the stick cars don't have any so It trows a p1613 code. I need to recode the ecu#2 to work with the stick transmission. The problem is that I've been doing some research on subject and have not been able to find all the info necessary to complete this. I have read that you need a password or code but don't know where to get this code. Can someone give me some insides on how to do this step by step. I'm new in the passat world and new with the Vag-com program wich BTW I got the full version. Please help and thanks in advance.

I had the P1613 code issue a long time ago. My 1999 AEB ECM was coded for an automatic transmission but my car is a manual. The ECM (because it thinks it's in an auto equipped car) tries to talk to the TCM but it can't because there is no TCM. This throws a P1613 code.

Connect your vag-com
turn ignition to ON (but don't start the car)
click on SELECT
click on 01-ENGINE
VCDS will establish communication with the ECM and post some information
click Coding-07
VCDS will post the Software Coding
write this series of numbers down in case you mess up and want to go back to the original values.
VCDS will pop up a baloon explaining what each part of the Coding number means.
You'll need to change the part of the code that refers to the transmission type.
click DO IT!
click Close Controller Go Back-06
click Go Back
click Exit

Drive your car to the nearest ice cream shop and treat yourself for a job well done!

Urlik, the ECM in the older cars can be coded for either auto or manual. I guess they went to a transmission specific ECM in later years.

Hey Steve it worked like a champ...really appreciate your help. Now for everyone else if you change your ECU and you get a P1613 code after installation of the new ECU please do as follow:

1. Remove new ECU from vehicle

2. Install the old ECU back in vehicle

3. Connect Vag-Com to your car

4. Turn ignition to the on position but don't start the vehicle

5. Click on SELECT and click on 01-ENG

6. Vag-Com will establish communication with the ECU and post some codes on these blocks: VAG NUMBER, COMPONENT, SOFT CODING, SHOP# & EXTRA.
Write down the code in block SOFT CODING.

7.Reinstall the new ECU and repeat steps 3-6

8.If code in block SOFT CODING is differnt from the code you got from the old ECU you need to recode your new ECU.

9.To do so click Coding-07

10.Change the number in SOFT CODING block to match the numbers from old ECU.

11. Click DO IT!

12. Click Close Controller Go Back-06

13. Click Go Back

14. Click Exit

15. Reopen Vag-com

16. Click on SELECT and click on 01-ENG

17. Vag-Com will establish communication with the ECU and post some codes on these blocks: VAG NUMBER, COMPONENT, SOFT CODING, SHOP# & EXTRA.
Make sure that the code in block SOFT CODING changed to the new number that you have input, it will be the same as the old ECU.

18. If so you are done and the new ECU has been recoded. Enjoy.

Special Thanks to Steve in Chicago for the info. I'm just making sure that everyone gets a step by step of process. Don't be afraid to do this, it took me more time to start my computer than recoding my ECU. Difficulty from 1-10 maybe a 2. Enjoy.

I don't know for sure, but I would guess, no.

Using VCDS, open up 01-Engine and then Coding-07 and see if it's an option you can change. It probably isn't.

You'll probably need to find yourself a replacement manual trans ECM to go along with the manual trans swap.

Try calling a place like Module Masters and see if they have a solution for you.

I would like to know about the 2002 ECM coding, the dealer is not wanting to help to re-code my 02 W8 ECM for the 00172 (manaual reference code).
Like others I do not have the 4 digit pin or 7 digit access code to be able to do this.
My swap is done and driving w/auto ECM, key and cluster.

I do have the (wrecked 03 W8 (6-speed) key, cluster and ECM but says 86k vice 28k miles...either way if I were to just swap the ECM I do not have either pin or 7 digit code for the VAGCOM to do it. Any help would be great

Bringing this one back from the dead. New faces since then. Anyone care to weigh in? I am specifically asking about a 2004 AWM. Can it be driven say....300 miles on a manual with a tip ECU and no issues? I know I can get an unlocked chipped ECU from K0mpresd, but just wondering.

I'm waking this back up with you VAGguy...trying to figure out why my coding attempts are failing after flashing with Maestro. It's been a couple months so I can't remember for sure but I swear I recoded this thing to auto from manual when I was playing around with it a few months ago. I just flashed it today to a Maestro Stage 3 file and now the soft coding is 07500 where my notes say it used to be 16501 as it came out of the MT donor car, or 16551 as the auto ECU I'm replacing it with is. I'll keep digging around for a solution and post what I come up with. In more specific answer to your question though VAGguy, I have a 2002 AWM and like I said I swear I re-softcoded it myself back I July/Aug when I parted out the donor car. It's undriveable in its current condition too - tranny is locked in limp-home mode. Starts in 2nd gear, won't shift any higher.

Okay VAGguy, I confirmed you definitely can change the coding on an AWM ECU using the method posted by Steve. Once I flashed my donor ECU back to stock it was code 16501 for MT. however, before I could change the coding I had to change my equipment code from 497686 to 49768 (just deleted the last character). Then I successfully coded it from 16501 to 16551.

Hope that helps...update the thread if I missed the mark on anything and I'll try to help again.

Thanks,

Greg

good to know!! Thanks much CrashRat! I plan on doing a manual swap after the first of the year and would rather keep my fully loaded APR chip without having to buy another ECU. It will be done at a friends house many miles away so I want to make sure it will work, or I am stuck.

With the full VCDS, it is as simple as Steve posted above. The system gives you the choices and it even had the correct non ASR version for my car. I still have to see if the 1.8T ECU has the non ASR version, since the 01 B5 4MO did not have ASR or ESP available.

Might be a good idea to try re-coding with a more local VAG-COM first to make sure it works before you do your tranny swap? It'll either work or not work. If it works, the worst that'll happen is all your gear indicators will light up at once on the MFD and you'll be stuck in 2nd gear until you code it back. But that would at least confirm you could do it. With my ECU flashed by Maestro, it would not let me change the coding. I had to flash it back to stock, THEN I could change the coding.

btw, on your M/T swap - have you factored in the time/tools needed to machine the pilot bearing into the back of your auto crank? I have not done that before but I'm told it's different. I too am doing an MT swap but also with a 2.0L stroker i'm currently building. I bought a whole crashed donor car so i could work on it as time allows and not be stressed out too badly if things take longer than expected.

Good luck!

Yeah. I'm doing it with a veteran swapper. I'm going to have a backup car in case the weekend does not progress as planned.
If I have to reflash the Apr tune, I might as well just get a new ecu.

I've also heard that you can use the bearing from a certain model of Porsche instead of grinding. Either way, it only takes a few minutes

That's exactly what I did. There’s a brass colored bushing or insert in the 1.8T auto crank that you need to pull and the cut V6 pilot bearing taps right in.

Forgot about this thread. Coming up on 2 years swapped and was successfully able to recode to manual on one of the latest ECUs for the B5.5.

Vwb5t recoded it for me. I think you need the full version. You won’t lose the tune. It basically tells the ECU to not look for a transmission.
