    passat 2002 blinking engine light

Drove fairly fast (160km/hr or 100 miles/hr) then took an exit down a ramp and had to stop at a red light. Noticed all of a sudden that the engine was running bit rougher and then noticed the yellow engine light blinking. I know to turn off the engine immediatly when this occurs but then all of a sudden engine light turned off and car was running smooth again. Anything serious?
Car has been reliable for 7 years - proper mantained, synthetic oil, 171000km, timing belt changed, burns very little oil, good torque.
Should I have it checked by the dealer (fantastic fair vw dealer)?

first guess would be coil pack. Get it scanned and let's see. Run it a little hard here and there and see if it happens again.

x3 coil pack, same thing happened to me, look for my earlier post a few weeks back.

Want a cheap way to check?

Grab one at whatever auto shop has one, and swap each of them right in the parking lot, takes about 20 seconds to do.

If it's not a coil, return for a refund.

    Good point VAGguy.
    Quoting my receipt:
Requests for refunds may be denied if the item has been used or installed.
So, best to take it home first.
This was Auto Zone of all places, that had a replacement coil, on a Sunday evening.
    Saved my ass for $33.
Worst case, you have a backup for when the next one does go.
