how do you disable the check engine light

The check engine light of my 99 passat wagon is on.

I went to a mechanic the other day to fix an exhaust pipe. However the check engine light was still on when he fixed it. He scanned it and found an evap code.

He cleared it with the scanner. When I went to fill up my car. I found that my gas cap was missing. I bought a new one, put some more gas in the tank but the check engine light is still on.

How do I disable the check engine light without a scanner?

autozone can clear it, or you can play the waiting game it will go off by itself after so long if the problem has been fixed.

if the evap is the only thing that set it off, then it should go away in a few drive cycles.

    dang it!

Just disconnect the battery, and let it sit for a few minutes.

    x2

if that doesn't work im pretty sure the majority of OBDII(on board diagnostic) allow you to clear all codes and you can pick them up at places like canadian tire (im from toronto)

Um sorry you're so late to the game guys, but chances are the evap code and CEL was because he has no gas cap. IF that fixed it, the CEL should go away soon.

I don't think the B5.5 throw a CEL for this. I'm pretty sure the b5's do.

My B5 does - you are right. I left the gas cap hanging off once, and drove over 20 miles before the CEL came on. Replaced the cap, and CEL went off in a few minutes.

Evap systems have been mandated in vehicles since the early '70s. My '73 VW still has it, though it's largely nonfunctional because the parts are impossible to find.

It was quite simple back in the day. Vent line went to a charcoal canister in the fender, which then fed a charcoal canister in the engine compartment. Air from the cooling fan blew into the rear canister, which then fed into the air cleaner housing (on the dirty side of the cleaner).

Now it's just a 3.5mm hose that vents out into the fender.

I dont understand why a loose gas cap would trigger a cel when the gas cap has it's own light.

because p0440 is a code for an evap emissions controll system failure.

the gascap light is specifically for a noticeable loss of pressure in the gastank only.

440 has to do with a lot of other components as well.

it also triggers the light due to federally mandated emission standardized codes (the p series). the gascap light is something that came later to say "hey idiot, check your cap"

I'm pretty sure my B5 does not have a gas cap light (2001 AUG). But I am sure a loose or missing gas cap will throw a CEL.

2004 and up has a separate light for the gas cap. Prior to that, it's just a regular CEL.

    Learn something new every day....

The funny thing is, the light looks like a car with a giant screw going into it (the screw being the gas cap I guess)

I'm curious about this light in my '04... I'm going to have to leave my cap loose just for the heck of it. Never seen it before at all.

It might not come on right away. It may take a few miles. Funny, someone wants a dash light to come on in a VW....
