What and Where is the Multi-function Switch

I have read several threads regarding problems with transmissions in Tip mode that mention a multi-function switch. I have searched without success, so a couple basic questions...

    Where is this switch located?

What does this switch do, in general, that makes it multi-function?

Any links to old thread on this subject would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

Unless I'm reading your question wrong...
The Multifunction switch has nothing to do with the control of the Tip.
It is located on the right-hand (windhield wiper) stalk, and is used to scroll through the options on the multifunction trip computer and FIS display (the red display in the center of your dash).

That could be. The switch may not play a part in controlling the Tip, rather just displaying the selected gear. The problems the threads refer to are that the display for the Tip gearing doesn't show the correct information or the trannie is in limp mode. I assumed it was a switch dealing with the transmission as opposed to the switch for the MFA.

Here is one thread that talks about the problem...

Is the switch being referred to the same as the MFA control switch on the wiper stalk?

The multifunction switch (multifunction transmission range switch) is on the left side of the TIP transmission. When you select different gears the multifunction switch tells the transmission control module what gear you are in. The control module receives feedback from the switch (4 pins) and can determine if the switch is bad. The control module will then put the transmission in a limp mode to protect the transmission.

Thanks Tom. That makes more sense to me given the context of the threads.

So, the switch is mounted to the transmission; meaning to replace the switch I would need to access it from under the car, not through the shift selector assembly in the interior, right?

Yes under the car. You have to remove the left transmission bracket to
    remove/install switch.
