Fault 01203: Something with ABS and Instrument Cluster

    Full Text:

01203 - Electrical Connection between ABS and Instrument Cluster; 03-10 - No Signal – Intermittent

    What I'm seeing:

ABS light comes on while Brake light flashes 3 times or so. The car also beeps, then it goes away. I've tested ABS 3 times after this and ABS works fine.

What does it mean? Is it the ABS Control Module? If not, could it be a loose connection somewhere?

    Thanks,
    mike5

Do you have a turbotimer installed?
what about a vag-com? can you still scan all of the modules?

I have a TT and have had it for 4 years without any problems.

I had my friend pull the codes last night with his VAG-COM...so I assume the module works. Given this, do I have to tear everything apart and check wires? Also, what does the ABS module look like? Anyone have pics?

    Thanks,
    mike

A month ago I was going to buy a 99 a4. When I took the car to get it inspected, the same thing happened to me. The shop that did the inspection said it could be as simple as a loose wire (min. $200) to fix and as complicated as needing a new ABS controller (min $1000, assuming you use a new module). An AUDI dealer confirmed what the shop said. I posted a bunch to audiworld.com and people who had the same problem told me the same as AUDI and my mechanic. Sadly, most said the problem was the ABS control module. Most managed to find a used module for about $300-400.

This was discussed in the past. Try searching for sure. I cannot refer you directly to any posts. It is an expensive part. Does your ABS still work? The ABS module I do believe is the box of metal on the drivers side fender.. has some electrical connections going into it. I recall there was some really easy reason as to why these were failing. No warranty?

Going off memory here. Sorry about the vaugeness. Do a search. Hopefully more informed B5ers will speak up.

Thanks for the info. I've searched and the search basically points to the ABS Control Module. Where should I look for a used/cheap one?

    Thanks,

Get the part number (either through a part list or off the part)
Then start calling junkyards, searching through FS forums, or try carpart.com.

ABS lights flashing and ABS comes and goes?????

I am having the exact same problem. Took my 99 Passat V6 to two different dealers. One says I need a new instrument control unit ($600), the other says I need ABS Module and pump (1900). I don't know what's wrong. I don't know what caused the ABS to just go. I don't want to choose one just to find out I should have fixed the other. Does anyone know what the problem might be. I'm so confused. The car is ATLANTA and my local MD mechanics keep telling me that have no ABS is OK. Drive it back to MD and they will take a look at it. I need the car fixed so that I can drive it on the hightway back to MD from ATLANTA.

My boss is having this problem as well. The brakes still work and everything though. There must be someway to bypass this just because its so annoying...as long as the brakes work its all good.

    Update:

So this issue is still bugging me and I want to fix it. So I dug into it some more and found some answers and now have more questions!

For one thing, it appears that dealers only sell the ABS pump and module together as one piece. You cannot buy the module alone from the dealer. Next issue is part numbers. According to VAG-COm, the part number for my module is 8E0 614 111 P. The dealer says that this part number is for the moduel alone (which they do not sell). The dealer then told me the part number for both pump and module is 8E0 614 111 AN.

    Questions:
    1. Anyone out there replace the module without replacing the pump?
    2. I've seen some part numbers on Ebay that don't appear anything like the part numbers above. What are they referencing?
    3. Any other modules/module pump units that are compatible with mine or others?
    4. If anyone has the part(s) I'm looking for, drop me a line. ..please

    TIA

    mike

dude, i've had this problem since the beggining of time( 1 year) i got the same code, i've tried cleanning the abs/speed sensors(i think thats what they were) checked the electrical components etc.....

to make a long story short, and my own opinion, VW made the abs system with this sleeping monster built in, so when awaken, it will anoy the s#$t out of the owner of the car. therefor>spend more money.....
anway i've had the problem for so long, and everythink works perfect including the abs. i dont have hundreds of dollars JUST to make the light go away. if it were a matter of high effort and lettle money, i would fix. but seems like a high dollar, little effort deal to fix, and personally, i would spend the $$$ on more mods  !!!

i posted a thread about this when i joined clubb5 and i didnt get much responce, i felt like i was the only one w/ the problem, but apparently nott

my advise to all is justt ignore it and be happy use the $$ on something you want, dont worry, even if your affraid soem potential compettition will see your flashing light, I bet they wont say s#$T when they get smoked by
    some bad ass ...........

    and thats my .02 cents.........

    laters peeps...........

    Alfredo,

The thing is that my ABS does not work when the lights are on, trust me. I've locked up wheels just to test this fact. In addition, I run the A8 brakes up front which gives me a lot of braking power and easily locks up the front wheels before the rear! I'm just affraid that I'll lock them up (especially in the rain) and get into an accident. Also, I commute 70 miles a day.

The flip side is that my car has 135K and I've spent a lot of money in maintanence and don't feel like spending any more, but if I get some answers and find a used unit...I'll probably go for it.

well i guess your right, if i were you i would keek an eye out on the classified forum, sometimes they part out B5's and maybe they wont mind hooking you up, im sure the ABS module wont be a popular item

unless you find a cheap one else where, keep looking im sure there is something out there, try other dealers or iff you have junk yards that sell VW parts give them a try, I unfortunately dont have any junk yard in my area that have newer VW :???: but that would be my first bet.

also try autozone/pepboys/oreily's i doubt they'll have it, but who knows. i'll check it out and let you know.

well good luck bro. and please keep us posted on your finds, im sure im not the only one interested. i'll give it another looking into myself, maybe this time around i'll find something.

Alfredo, I've had the same problem for the past 10 months and I was happy to ignore it until time for my annual Virginia Safety inspection came about! The gas station mechanic FAILED safety inspection for the car :???: Even though I argued that a lot of cars on the road today do not have ABS but he wouldn't listen. So now I have to probably dishout loads of $$s to get it fixed and get a $15 state safety inspection done

Are you required to do this in TX? Anyone else had safety inspection issue with ABS light on?

i have the same thing going on(abs light on , brake warning light flashing, beeping sound when the car is started) with the abs not functioning.I had searched the forums and diagnosed the problem myself(thanks cb5). the dealer quote to me for the abs module and pump was 1400(also already had a ballpark figure from this forum) .i said no thanks, i will pump the brake pedal like i used to do in the olden days .
as far as inspection, in georgia, all they test for is emission related stuff and CEL's, so my car passed with this stuff going on without a problem.

ok...listen up i just got my abs control module fixed and the lights have been off for a few days now i just wanted to let you guys know that i got the part for $300 and installed for $100.my mechanic said his book suggested that putting the module in should take 1.5 hours to put in it took my mechanic 45 minnutes.so dont listen to the shops that tell you 3 hours like the dealer told me.ITS NOT TRUE.also if you do decide to get the part used like i did make sure you get one with THE SAME EXACT PART # THIS WILL ENSURE THAT THE PART WILL WORK WITHOUT HAVING TO GO TO THE DEALER TO HAVE IT SCANNED.(this is what i have heard)for example my part # was 8EO 614 111B the B WAS THE IMPORTANT LETTER, because there are alot of these out there with all differrent letters at the end.so if yours ends with a p get one that ends with a p.if you still dont want to spend four or five hundred dollars to fix it then put a racing sticker over the abs and brake light so the inspection station cant see that the light is on. if anyone needs help locating the part send me a message i will help you.ok and good luck with this annoying part that is a pain in the ass to deal with.
