Hi everyone, we just picked up our 2013 passat TDI. I know the book says to service the engine every 10k miles and I was wondering if anyone else felt like this might be a bit too long of a service interval. I was thinking about doing the services every 5k miles. Also does the TDI use timing gears, chain, or belt and what is the normal service interval for it. I make sure I buy fuel for it at reliable stations such as BP or Piolt where the diesel is treated but do I need to add any extra treatment for the winter months. Finally for the last question, does this car have a fuel/water separator on it somewhere, or is it built into the fuel filter.
10k mile interval is conservative. More frequently is a waste of money and resources. Use the proper oil and a good filter.
TDI uses a belt. I believe the interval is now 120k miles, Check the Owner's Manual.
Winter fuel is already treated here in the Southern Tier. Where do you live in So. NY? Visit us sometime in the Elmira/Corning area. We have a stable of TDI's.
No actual water separator as such. Filter will take care of the minimal water we seem to accumulate.
Thanks so much for the advice, this is actually my first VW and also first diesel powered passenger car. All of my experience is with heavy equipment and i am constantly watching the the water separator and treating the fuel. Im actually further south than you in Pearl River about 20 mins from NYC. I appreciate the offer and I might have to visit because we like to go up and out that way to go camping. Also have you had any troubles with cold starts up where you live?
Heavy equipment? I believe we have some things in common... A Komatsu dozer, a 580SK, a Kubota 3830, and an old beater Lull with an anemic Perkins. Then a CTD 2500, an '03 Jetta TDI, and two 2013 Passat TDI's with a 2014 about to be delivered. We have a well equipped shop complete with a two post lift and tools enough to handle all but the heaviest jobs. Worst of all we're too stupid to know there's a job we can't do.
So... The '03 Jetta is a bit reluctant to start in very cold weather, however it's kept in a heated garage. (It never refuses to start though.) The Passat TDI's will never be an issue if you keep good fuel in them. Obviously they like a warm garage but it's not necessary. Water in our fuel has never been an issue. I can't say exactly why. We do keep watch though and the 580 and the Kubota live in a heated shop along with the truck. The Komatsu is unbelievable as it starts and runs in the coldest weather without an issue. The Perkins will start with some help but the Lull hydraulics really don't work well in the cold. We've used it in an emergency but it's a warmer weather machine really.
Pearl River? On a former job we had an office in Tuxedo. One of the guys lived in Sloatsburg. I spent a lot of time in the area when he was on vacation. Truthfully I prefer our end of Rt 17 compared to yours.
You have a very nice collection, I am very jealous all of my toys and cars live in unheated garages. Im not sure if the passat will fit in the garage yet since our garage is a bit on the small side. Im glad to hear that it shouldnt be troublesome since its the wifes daily driver. I am with you on that I love getting up and out of the rockland county area especially since we all love camping and camping is not quite the same around here.
