Volkswagen Passat History Since 1973, Volkswagen has defined the mid-range of cars with its Passat. Six generations, more than 16 million sold, its popular both with families and for business. In November, VW had launched in the seventh generation. 80% of all customers choose the wagon and it’s a wagon giving us our first impressions. Evolution instead of revolution, that’s the key to the Passat’s success. The design has been carefully updated. The front was adopted to fit in with the new brand identity. There was no need to improve the king sized proportions of the former Passat. The exterior dimensions have practically remained unchanged. The wagon’s trunk holds between 603 and 1,789 liters of cargo. The leg room in the back is more than ample. The basic layout of the dash and the controls is also the same. Surfaces and materials have a higher class feel to them. The seats are made to fit everyone. They’re long and offer great back and lateral support as well. The rear is as spacious as ever, even long legs can stretch out comfortably. Visibility and space would be worthy of praise even in the higher class of car. The trunk of the Passat wagon is legendary; flat, wide and variable. Anyone who needs to transport even more would be better off with a van. A choice of seven engines is available ranging from 105 to 300 horsepower. There are four gas units along with three diesel versions. A start-stop automatic function, new common rail injection and an even more responsive turbo charger reduce the consumption of the 170 horsepower, two littered TDI to 4.7 liters per 100 kilometers. Starting in 2011, VW will be offering optional — on headlights and dynamic high beams derived from the Touareg for the Passat. A camera detects on coming vehicles, automatically dimming the lights. The Passat has been able to improve its superb on road driving characteristics in many ways. Its handling and comfort continue to place it first in the mid-range. The Passat also claims a top position for its safety with eight airbags and a host of different safety systems. VW offers optional assistance like the automatic distance control at a lower price than the competition. No fortuneteller is necessary to tell the future of this car, the seventh generation of the Passat is definitely destined to be a successful as the ones before it.
